Skin tags are raised lumps that are usually flesh coloured or brown and hang from the surface of your skin by a small, thin stalk called a peduncle.
They're common in both men and women, especially over the age of 50, and can be found anywhere on the body although they're most commonly seen where the skin folds, such as the armpits, groin, and neck.
They're made of loose collagen fibres and blood vessels surrounded by skin, and are completely harmless, usually causing no pain or discomfort. However, they can be embarrassing and occasionally snag on clothing or jewellery and bleed as a result.
It’s unclear exactly what causes skin tags, but as they usually show up in skin folds, friction may play a role. Other common causes can include genetics, insulin resistance or Type 2 diabetes, as well as obesity and pregnancy.
You can help to minimise the development of skin tags by losing weight, avoiding eating saturated fats and sugars and steering clear of wearing any tight clothing.
