Excessive Sweating

Excessive sweating, also known as hyperhidrosis, causes your body to sweat much more than it needs to in order to regulate your core body temperature. The most commonly affected area is the underarms, but it can also be present in the hands, feet, face and head.

What Causes

Excessive Sweating

The most common causes of excessive sweating include:

  • Sudden changes in body temperature
  • Emotions and stress
  • Spicy foods, alcoholic drinks, caffeinated drinks, soda, coffee and tea.
  • Medications for illnesses such as cancer, diabetes, fever, infection, hypoglycaemia, painkillers, synthetic thyroid hormones and CPRS (complex regional pain syndrome).
  • Menopause
  • Pregnancy
  • Obesity
  • Alcoholism.

Prevention of

Excessive Sweating

You can help to make yourself more comfortable and minimize sweating by wearing several light layers of clothing that allow your skin to breathe, removing layers as you heat up. Wash dried sweat off your face and body and change sweaty clothes to reduce the risk of bacterial or yeast infections.

Drink plenty of water and avoid caffeinated drinks, as well as removing foods from your diet that increase sweating, such as spicy foods. Arrange a consultation with our nurse practitioners to discuss your treatment options.
