The term ‘dull skin’ or ‘lacklustre skin’ usually refers to tired-looking, dry skin which has lost its natural glow. Dull skin is a common skin complaint.
In a young skin, the skin cells shed every 30 days. However, as we age, the process can take up to 60 days, which results in a backlog of dead skin cells, giving the appearance of a dull complexion.
During the ageing process, the skin can also lose its brightness and almost look grey, making the skin appear older than its true age. Pigmentation and wrinkles caused by sun damage can have this effect, causing the skin to lose its elasticity and fullness.
Dehydrated skin can also look dull, as can dark circles. Contributors lifestyle factors include smoking, poor diet, stress and lack of sleep.
To help prevent dull skin, wear an SPF daily and use skincare that contains key ingredients like glycolic acid. Choose moisturisers that contain vitamin A, vitamin C and hyaluronic acid.
