Laughter lines, also called smile lines, are types of wrinkles that develop around the sides of your mouth and sometimes also occur around your eyes. They are more noticeable when you smile and can add years to your appearance.
As the name suggests, laughter lines appear on the parts of the face that naturally crease when we laugh and smile. The primary causes of laughter lines include a loss of collagen and elasticity in the skin, as well as factors like genetics, smoking, dehydrated skin and sun damage.
You can help to prevent laughter lines by using an SPF daily to protect your skin from harmful UV rays, as well as drinking plenty of water, avoiding too much caffeine or alcohol and following a good skincare routine.
Wash your face once or twice a day followed by a moisturiser that contains anti-ageing ingredients such as peptides and vitamin A. Exercise and a plant-based diet can also keep your skin in good health, and if you needed another reason to quit smoking, know that kicking this habit now can help prevent future wrinkles, including laughter lines.
